AST Responds to SEPA Sea Lice Consultation

AST RESPONDS TO SEA LICE CONSULTATION
Our response to SEPA’s proposed sea lice frameworkLast week the Atlantic Salmon Trust submitted its formal, technical response to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s (SEPA) consultation on ‘Detailed proposals for a risk-based, spatial framework for managing interaction between sea lice from marine finfish farm developments and wild salmonids in Scotland.’ This consultation process relates to the development of ‘Wild Salmon Protection Zones’ along the West Coast of Scotland.

We believe that, in order for the proposed framework and Wild Salmon Protection Zones to provide effective protection for wild salmon and sea trout from sea lice emanating from salmon farms, they must meet these three key criteria:

– Provide year-round protection for wild salmon and sea trout.
– Set sea lice threshold levels which are in line with the highest international standards.
– Apply to all existing salmon farms, not just ‘new or expanding’ farms.

Above all, the proposed regulatory framework must meet the tests of being robust, transparent, enforceable and enforced.READ OUR RESPONSE IN FULLPROJECT DEVERON
Hollywood stars join the fight to save our salmonLaunching this autumn, Project Deveron, a partnership with the Deveron, Bogie & Isla Rivers Charitable Trust, is our second, brand-new catchment-scale salmon restoration initiative. This large-scale habitat restoration project will also provide a new, monitored river system for Scotland’s East Coast to twin with Project Laxford on the west.

We were thrilled to be joined by actors, Jim Murray (also an AST ambassador) and Dominic West, who generously gave up their time and energy to help raise awareness of the salmon crisis and the work being undertaken by the teams on the ground to halt and reverse it.

A short film featuring Jim and Dominic will be released later this year to launch the project to the public. Stay tuned!PUBLIC AWARENESS
BBC Landward joins our team on Project LaxfordRaising awareness with the wider public is vital when it comes to communicating the urgent need to restore our wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout. We were therefore delighted to welcome the team from BBC Landward to Project Laxford earlier this month and we hope that the story will hit television screens over the winter.READ ABOUT PROJECT LAXFORDBECOME A MEMBER
